Software Reuse: Architecture Process and Organization for Business Success
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (22 May, 1997)
Authors: Ivar Jacobson, Martin Griss, and Patrik Jonsson
Average review score:

Great place to start
This is an excellent book for developers, architects, project managers, and development managers. It clearly explains how to adjust your development practices to achieve reuse at all levels. I found it particularly helpful in diagnosing common management issues that hinder reuse practices. This book has helped me gather the information needed to effectively establish reusability.

Read it, read it, read it!
Don't limit yourself to code reusability. This book goes further. Think about reusability from the beginning, put it into your analysis and design models.

The book talks about an _architecture_ and a _process_ to achieve software reusability. I found the book hard to read. Sometimes I felt they did not "hit-the-ground". My problem? I was thinking in code. Don't let that happen to you.

The authors talk about a complete organized process to achieve reusability. The book is a must if you are thinking in reusability.

Read it!

A comprehensive approach to effective Software Reuse
Having reviewed this book before and after it's publication, I can say without a doubt that this is the best book to date on how to implement a effective, systematic reuse program. The book addresses all aspects of Software Reuse, from organizational factors to implementation technologies. All the authors have experience with implementing reuse programs in the real world, and they speak from experience as well as from expertise. If you are at all interested in Software Reuse, or with improving software development productivity, you need this book.

The Sonnets (Everyman's Library)
Published in Paperback by Everymans Library (December, 1993)
Authors: William Shakespeare and Martin Dodsworth
Average review score:

Classic poetry
The sonnet is one of the more difficult-to-write forms of poetry, with very strict rules on rhyming and lines, and that makes Shakespeare's collection of sonnets all the more impressive. Shakespeare sprinkled his various plays with poetry and songs, but there is something of a different flavor to these works.

Titleless, identified only by numbers, these poems have vivid metaphors and imagery ("let not winter's ragged hand deface," "gold candles fix'd in heaven's air"). The tone of the poetry varies from one sonnet to the next; sometimes it focuses on old age, to love that "looks upon tempests and is not shaken," and simple expressions that can't really be interpreted any other way. Some of it is pretty well-known ("Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?/Thou art more lovely and more temperate") but most of them you won't have seen before.

Even if you're not normally a fan of poetry, the delicate touch of Shakespeare's words is worth checking into. Fantastic.

A great find - It's both volumes
This edition of the sonnets is one of the most important and the description on Amazon is misleading - It is actually both volumes 24 and 25 bound together so you get the complete set It's hard to find this book so it is a great find in this version

Beautiful Collection
Shakespeare's amazing Sonnets are compiled here in this wonderful volume, a great addition to anyone's bookshelf. If you love Shakespeare, then this is a must-have book.

Spirit of the Harvest: North American Indian Cooking
Published in Hardcover by Stewart, Tabori & Chang (September, 1991)
Authors: Beverly Cox and Martin Jacobs
Average review score:

Easy Recipes, Beautiful Photographs
This is a "must have" cookbook if you'd like to prepare authentic Native American food. The ingredients are easy to find in any well stocked grocery store, and the recipes are not difficult. No "weird" ethnic foods here- just good meals made with what's available. The historical background for the foods of different tribes is an interesting read. The photographs and drawings are absolutely beautiful- those alone are good reasons to purchase this book!

BEST American cookbook yet!
The photography is unbelievable and the recipes work! The book gives us a palatable way to enjoy the true native american way of cooking. I would highly reccomend this book to everyone that loves to experience the enjoyment of cooking new recepies and the even greater enjoyment of eating what they have re-created. A great book for all ages and ethnic backrounds. Good food and lots of it!

A great marriage of Native American history and recipes.
The explanations of the ceremonies when certain dishes were prepared and eaten gave insights into how Native Americans lived and celebrated life. I was surprised how much history was involved in the dishes I grew up eating and had assumed were of early American or European origin. History books never mention that our early indigenous people were gourmands.

SQL: Access to SQL Server
Published in Paperback by APress (15 January, 2002)
Authors: Susan Sales Harkins and Martin W.P. Reid
Average review score:

Excellent, Excellent book
I own about 30 books about Access (all versions). This book tops all of them. If you are using Access 2000 or 2002(XP) and you like to know about SQL Server (2000), trust me this is it. Try to read it from begining to the end. It's written in english language (not technical slang) and it shows you some cool tricks even for those Access 97 users. Hope to see more books from these guys. Thanks

Exellent Resource for SQL Server and Access
This book is well written and easy to follow. The explanations are written in clear language and instructions are written out step by step. The book is well organized which means it's easy to use it more as a reference book. But, it is such a pleasure to read, you want want to skip a single page. This book covers both very elemental aspects of SQL, but also has much to offer the more experienced user.

Simply the best - is #1 in my top 3 books to "use".
I read a lot of books covering topics from Access, SQL Server, to VBA. This book covers all of the "required" Access topics. It covers them better than any other book I have ever seen. It then goes on to cover topics I have not seen in other books or classes. While reading the book you will catch yourself saying why have I never seen this before, or hey I can use this! It uses Jet, Transact & VBA. Do you want to build better applications, do you want to know more than the competition, do you want to be a better developer? If so, this book is a definite purchase.

This book is already my favorite book of all time, replacing "The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL
by Kenneth W. Henderson, Ken Henderson". (You should get that book as well). I also just purchased "Microsoft Access Version 2002 Inside Out (With CD-ROM) by Helen Feddema" and I think that book will also be in my "top three" books to reference/read.

If you are serious about being a top developer, get this book.

St Martin & St Barts Alive

Not To Miss - A Must Have
Great Book. We have bought many books about the Caribbean over the years, but this is one of the best if not the best. Easy to read, full of up to date info and breaks it down into catagories easy to find. Does not just refer to the large hotels or famous places to eat, but also those not so famous.
THE TIPS that are easy to see, are throughout the book that give short, to the point, info.
This is a valuable book.

Excellent
An excellent new guide... replete with detailed information on every aspect of vacationing on the islands. Illustrated with maps and drawings. Focus on France

We will have this book with us on our next trip
Finally! We have looked for years for a book which gave St. Barth proper coverage. We have heretofore found only books with from a few to a dozen pages. St. Martin & St. Barts Alive gives this tiny island well over a hundred pages, and it covers beaches, restaurants, hotels, villas, shopping, and considerably more. Our edition is copyright 1999, but the authors mention the damage done by Hurricane Luis several times -- do not let that dissuade you; the island had fully recovered when we visited there two seasons after Luis.

The layout uses lots of free clip art, one font used for headings is rather hard to read, and there are no photographs, but the book is well- written in plain English, without gushing -- we enjoyed it. The authors have covered the island very well, and there were lots of tips which were new to us. We will have this book with us on our next trip.

This book is recommended for all visitors to St. Barts, whether first- timers or old hands on the island.

Stokes Purple Martin Book: The Complete Guide to Attracting and Housing Purple Martins (Stokes Backyard Nature Books)
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (April, 1997)
Authors: Donald Stokes, Justin L. Brown, and Lillian Q. Stokes
Average review score:

Everything I wanted to know about attracting Purple Martins!
My husband and I invested in a Purple Martin House, but didn't have a clue how to entice them to our back yard! I have several of the Stokes bird books and have always found them informative, easy to use, and excellent photography. I found all of this to be true in their Purple Martin Book. The book starts with Purple Martin basics, how to attract, and something I hadn't even thought of, when to expect their arrival. Each section of their breeding range has a different date, the Gulf Coast being approximately Feb. 1st, so I need to get ready in a hurry! Also covered, is their behavior, selecting housing, egg laying to leaving the nest. Dealing with predators and parasites. I don't think there was a "stone uncovered"!If you just enjoy learning about birds, this book is a joy. For me, I am hoping in a few short weeks, I'll be a Purple Martin landlord!

An essential book for Purple Martin landlords
Educate yourself before you buy a Purple Martin house. Reading this book is a great beginning. Many houses sold are not suitable and you will end up with a sparrow house. The Stokes have thorough information and nice photographs in their book. I also recommend you join the PMCA (Purple Martin Conservation Association), Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Edinboro, PA, 16444 if you are serious about being a martin landlord.

Becoming a Purple Martin 'Landlord'
Feeding wild birds has always brought me pleasure. When I decided I would like to attract a colony of purple martins to my backyard I thought it would simply be a matter of buying a martin house and enjoying the birds once they moved in. I soon found out that becoming a purple martin landlord is a bit more complicated. This book provided a wealth of information about all aspects of attracting and keeping purple martins. From the book, beginners to this hobby learn about various housing types, placement of houses, as well as when and how to successfully attract martins. This book is beautifully illustrated with full color photographs of adult martins and nestlings.I think this book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in keeping purple martins as a hobby.

Storm Surge
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (August, 2001)
Author: William Neil Martin
Average review score:

Great Book
This novel is written very well. I didn't want to put the book down at all. If your familar with Hurricane Camille (that actually happened), then you would appreciate the well written story that goes with it. Very entertaining! Can't wait for the next one.

Storm Surge by William Neil Martin
I live in Gulfport,MS. The author has captured the realization of Hurricane Camille into depth. The book brought back memories of that night and the devastation for days afterwards. I personally was impressed on how the author mentioned local sites and locations in 1969, most of which no longer exist. Storm Surge is an exciting, fast-moving murder mystery. Outstanding book.

human nature and nature
I read a lot of books and am always looking for a new author. However, I have some trepidation when I buy a new author. This time the money was well spent. Storm Surge is an exciting, gritty book of human nature gone wild and nature gone wild. It is suspensful and riveting. The author knows police procedure and well describes the result of a hurry-cane. I highly recomend this book and am looking forward to more.

Supreme Cuisine
Published in Paperback by Joshua Morris Pub (January, 1993)
Author: Pol Martin
Average review score:

I saw this book yesterday at a cook books store in Burbank.
I have two books by Pol Martin and he is the best, I was surprise to see that his books are out of print thru Amazon.com.

How could this book be out of print?!
I was visiting a friend's seafood restaurant and noticed this cuisine book. It looks like they've been using this book for quite a few years as reference. I knew right away I want this book because of the instructions were so clear to follow and the great photos of each recipe. This book should be the main course for your collection of cook books.

Pol Martin's Supreme Cuisine
I would simply like to say this is the only cookbook you'll ever need! Martin's style is elegant yet easy to use. Pol Martin's "Supreme Cuisine" will make cooking to impress your toughest critic a breeze! Everyone should own a copy of this book.

Symmetry in Chaos: A Search for Pattern in Mathematics, Art, and Nature
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (April, 1900)
Authors: Mike Field, Martin Golubitsky, and Michael Field
Average review score:

Fresh approach!
How is this book different from all the other fractal/chaos books on the market? Because of the emphasis on symmetry! Most fractal/chaos books are similar in the sense that they contain the same pictures. But even if you are fed up with Mandelbrot sets, you can safely open this book. You will love the fractal wallpapers.

The book is written by mathematicians, too, so it's factually correct, and has some real insight.

Just read it!

Symmetry: a powerful concept
This looks like another book of cool fractal pictures, but it's much more than that. The concept of symmetry is subtle and useful in the hard sciences as well as in literature and philosophy. This book provides a solid mathematical treatment of it, with excellent graphical examples. This book is great fun for math nerds, but can also entertain a more general audience that has some interest in fractals or in visualizing mathematical concepts.

A visually delightful book!
Not only is this book filled with eye-catching colorful pictures, it also does a wonderful job of explaining how they were generated. They also draw many interesting parallels between the computer-generated pictures and the structures that occur in nature or are man-made. Check out their Symmetric Chaos site at http://math.uh.edu/~chaos/Welcome.html!

Taboo: The Art of Tiki
Published in Paperback by Last Gasp of San Francisco (1999)
Authors: Martin McIntosh, Martin McIntosh, and Sven Kirsten
Average review score:

Simply gorgeous guide to contemporary tiki artists
I bought the hardcover version of this book and it is beau-ti-ful, babeeeeey! Martin McIntosh has done a wonderful job including vibrant, clear plates of some very cool art work. If you like Juxtapoz magazine, you will simply love the art featured in this book. It also features a small section on Bosko's fantabulous tiki mugs which will have to do 'ya until the definitive tome on tiki mugs gets published. In short, a great overview of the emerging tiki art underground.

Elvis-from-hell says: 5 stars!! 'Natch

Tiki Heaven!!
This is a fantastic book. Featuring Tiki themed and inspired art from artists such as Mark Ryden, Shag and Coop it is a great addition to any collection or serves as an ideal introduction to world of Tiki. There is a sequel "TABU TU" coming out in late 2001 so get this one while you can!!!

A must for any pop culture fan!
I highly recommend this book to all those interested in tikis (of course), art (especially those who enjoy Juxtapoz art magazine), or popular culture in general. I loved both the art (paintings, photos, carvings and more), and the essays by Sven Kirsten and Boyd Rice. The book is full of great art in vibrant color.
